My last post talked about when you’re the supporter, now this post is going to talk about when you’re the one always working.
As critical as it is for the partner who is focusing on career to understand the various stressors that the supporting partner is experiencing, it’s just as critical for the supporting partner to understand the stressors that come with focusing on career.
Before we dive in, I want to say WELCOME!! And.. I've got your back, mama! I've got another blog post linked below I feel may help you. I'd love to hear your thoughts! And if there's something you'd like me to talk about, just drop a comment at the end of this post!
As much as this situation may be for the ultimate and greater good for you as a couple, as a family, this is stressful.
The person who is putting so much concentration on work feels like they lose touch with their partner, and if kids are in the picture, with the kids too.
Between working longer hours and/or bringing work home, there is a bit of a loss in the daily relationships, and this has a huge emotional effect on the person who is career-focused.
Feelings of the one who's working so much
If the career focus is worth the exhaustion, the frustration, and if it’s worth missing out on what matters most in life to them.
What the supporting person needs to understand
Neither person is “better off” in this situation and this is where and why communication is crucial.
Because the supporting person needs to recognize if this starts to take a toll, more than what was anticipated, and needs to bring it up.
It needs to be talked about and quite possibly, the whole plan may need to be revisited and restructured.
Courtesy, compassion, communication and understanding are needed at this time. It is the only way you will get through this together and be all that much stronger for it.
What are your struggles in deciding whose career comes first? How do you decide who works the overtime (even if it's unpaid)? How do you decide who does double duty in the house plus their regular 40?
