Circling back to my first blog post, about realizing you're just a number; for some, it can be liberating, because once you come to terms with being just another employee, you may find it easy to re-prioritize everything else in your life.
You suddenly have free time to take day-trips on the weekends, or you go to the gym or take a personal development class during the time you'd normally be working late.
These are great things to do and the feelings that come along with this "freedom" are exhilarating.
But, to those who are – or were – work-a-holics, once you go through this experience, once you really accept the reality of what is, there can be a void left to fill.
So, how do you fill it? What do you do?
You're not the type of person to take it easy, you've got to be doing something productive, worth-while, you've somehow got to make use of your talents.
Before we chat about this, I want to say something...WELCOME!!! I'm thrilled you're here. I'm thrilled I can provide some value to you today! I've got another blog post I'd love for you to check out. Let me know what you think!
Go back to that LIKE/DISLIKE list that you made
Most people feel they aren't in a position to leave a job where the dynamic has changed, where their future has essentially been altered.
Maybe the money's good, maybe they enjoy the relationships they've forged there over the years, whatever the reason is for staying, it's fine. But you still have to do something that gives you that feeling of accomplishment. You can't go through life completely miserable just because of one circumstance.
So again, I ask, what's on that LIKE/DISLIKE list and how can you make it into something?
For some people, this is a hobby and for others it becomes a side gig (I try not to use the word hustle...who the fuck wants to hustle when they've just worked 50 hours at work and have kids and other obligations...)
Whatever it becomes for you, you need to ask yourself some questions
It needs to fill the void that was created when you lost that small part of yourself.
It needs to remind you that, and I'm not trying to sound hokey here, you have unique talents, that you have skills that maybe you haven't dipped into in a really long time that can not only be therapeutic for you, but you can help others in the process.
You may be thinking, why do I have to help others? Why does this thing I choose have to help others?
Well, let me tell you (of course I'm going to tell you...)
When you were so dedicated to your job, not that you're not now, but your vision has changed with this "just a
number" development, you were helping someone.
Maybe it was the company, maybe it was a coworker, maybe it was a customer or a vendor. Whatever your position at your job, somehow you're helping someone. And that's probably why you feel such a void after you come to terms with this realization.
And instead of you scrambling to figure everything out, I want to make this a smidge easier on you. If you can do something that not only keeps you busy, makes you feel useful, but also helps others in the process, your entire demeanor is going to change.
How do you feel?
Well, get off your pity pot and start to fix it. Fix the void.
Maybe this is a little old school, but when you have a giant hole in the seam of a shirt...you sew it (or take it to get repaired).
So, when you have this hole in the fiber of your being, you need to fix it. You need to put yourself on the mend, so to speak. And the key to healing ourselves is to help others.
So, what's that list say? What are you going to do to to mend the void? What can you do to mend the void and help someone else at the same time?
Leave me a comment!! Tag me on IG @natalieihde if you've ever felt this void and what you did to repair it...or if you still have it!
